History of the District Court Teldeniya

The History of the District Court Teldeniya

The history of the District and Magistrate's Court, Teldeniya is closely linked to the development of Sri Lanka's judicial system and the administrative importance of Teldeniya in the Kandy District.

Historical Background

Teldeniya became an important administrative center in the eastern part of the Kandy District during the British colonial period. As the population and commercial activities increased, judicial services were gradually expanded to the area.

The Magistrate's Court, Teldeniya was established to administer criminal justice and other matters within the Teldeniya Judicial Division. While the exact date of its establishment is not readily available in published records, the court has existed since at least the 1970s, as official government gazettes refer to acting magistrates serving in Teldeniya during that period.

Following the enactment of the Judicature Act No. 2 of 1978, Sri Lanka reorganized its court structure. Under this Act, Magistrates' Courts became courts of first instance in each judicial division, including Teldeniya.
